On May 13th, seven students and one teacher said yes to a call to donate. I am the second grade teacher at St. Anthony’s school and I have been growing my hair out for two years with a mission – to donate my “beautiful” hair to children who may not have hair due to illnesses through the non-profit organization Locks of Love. Stunning cut in CRP soil rental rate may devastate effort here

DSC_0622
ASSESSING THE BAD NEWS—Mike White, left, District Conservationist with the Tierra Blanca Soil and Water Conservation District/Resource Team Leader for the Hereford, Dimmitt, Tulia, and Farwell NRCS offices, and Dennis Gerber, Deaf Smith County Executive Director for the Farm Service Agency office in Hereford, discuss the sad ramifications of depressingly low soil rental rates announced by the USDA for the current round of CRP enrollment signups in the Panhandle that are underway now and continue through June 14.  Those rates were announce during a CRP EBI workshop held at the Hereford Community Center May 17 that was aimed at showing landowners how to improve their EBI score and enhance chances of getting CRP acres accepted.Announced soil rental rates are so poor that they may negate wildlife, soil, and water conservation efforts of the CRP program as old contracts expire. Landowners will likely be reluctant to sign up new acreage or re-enroll old tracts due to the poor soil rental rate designated for this region. (Photo by Jim Steiert)

A CRP/EBI workshop sponsored by Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever held here May 17 was intended to focus on enhancing acres for wildlife in order to improve chances of getting a new Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) contract. Bad news about slashed CRP soil rental rates muted that message and left landowners from Deaf Smith, Castro, and Parmer counties shaking their heads.
